I thought I would start a topic on speculation of which ship Ish is captain of.

So we know he is still part of DST.  One other ship mensioned at least twice in DS is the Gordon Van Tassell (Gordy).

Oeh... I haven't been listening for possible ships. That would mean I would have to listen to Double Share again... Shame...

Can't say I could even guess at which specific ship it is.  However, it was mentioned a couple of times that DST has a number of Damien Tractors (sp?) that were notoriously long on work and short on crew.  I think they even said they only have two duty sections.  I'm willing to bet he gets on of those.

Remember Ish has got to start making a lot of money to put himself into position to own his own ship. I just don't see the opportunity on the big baulk carriers - it depend if Ish starts making a big push now or waits 'till Owners Share to  make his fortune.

As we know now (and will soon know better in a matter of days), Ish's new ship is the SC Agamemnon, "the worst ship in the fleet".

Is there anyone else here who thinks it's a bit of a shame that Ish is still with DST roughly ten years after graduation?

I mean, it's not that he didn't get a lot done for the fleet in Double Share. Turning the William Stinker into what I hope is now one of DST's best-run ships has to count for something. I'm sure that would have boosted Maloney's confidence in Mr. Wang a fair bit, and I'm equally sure that for a first-generation spacer, that's nothing to sneeze at.

But Ishmael seemed to have so much promise as a spacer back on the Lois McKendrick, and now he's been stuck in what Nathan dubbed 'a mom and pop outfit' ever since he set foot on his first ship out of the Academy. Seems to me that given those circumstances, Ish would have been better off taking Federated Freight's offer of a scholarship in return for four years of service with the FF fleet - something Captain Giggone specifically advised against because she believed that better opportunities were out there for Ishmael.

To me, at least, DST (contrary to FF) doesn't sound like much of a springboard in that regard. So either I'm just much more ambitious than Ishael Wang ever was, or for some reason, our beloved land rat hasn't really been living up to all the promise people once saw in him.

Who wants to call shenanigans?

I guess my opinion comes from working in a big corporate environment but when you are a small fish in a big pond, it is very difficult to get up in the ranks and there is always some else who thinks they deserve it more.  So I think Ish would make it to Captain much quicker in a smaller outfit than in a big one.

Plus I think there are some additional factors in Ish deciding to stay on Diurnia at least, his father.

Well we should find out really soon now.

That's a valid point, Doug.

Still, given the fact that it's relatively 'easy' to make it to Captain in a small outfit like DST, wouldn't you think that spots in big fleets are more coveted by career-oriented spacers?

As for Ishmael choosing to stay in Diurnia on account of his father... Well, maybe. If the theories about Frank the fry cook are anywhere close to on target, and Ish has gotten the opportunity to get to know the man over the years, then I could see him sticking around because of that. He never struck me as all that curious about his father, though, so I don't think he'd have stuck around on the off chance of meeting his father one day if it didn't happen fairly quickly after the whole Burnside/Rossett fiasco.

But as you say, we should find out really soon now ...
