Question about children and St Cloud
«

I'm up to episode 5 of South Coast now (enjoying it a lot.) It's revived a question that occured to me back when I listened to Ish on St Cloud orbital in the tailor's booth.
Don't the children on St Cloud go to school? Otto hasn't mentioned anything about school or lessons so far, as of episode 5. There's been mention of youngsters going out on their family's boats from an early age, and starting actual work as crew in their early teens. And when Ish was in the tailor's booth on the orbital there were young children working there. This just seems a bit odd to me.
Now I know there's a continual labour shortage out there, so has St Cloud allowed child labour? What about education in that case? If there is a shortage of workers I'd have thought the ones you have would be best if they were flexible and had a broad enough education to fit into different jobs as market conditions demanded (well a bit like Ish and getting his share ratings in all the divisions - smart boy!)
Anyway, maybe it will be explained later in South Coast. It's just something that struck me and has been niggling at my brain.

Very excellent observation.
No, they don't go to "school" ... there's a reason for that, but I don't explain it.

Thanks, Nathan. Now I'm even more intrigued.

As am I... I think I just assumed some sort of computerized lessons for basic learning. That would explain the gaps in knowledge that some otherwise educated individuals seem to display (including instances where the story points out the missing understanding... ie "Infinity"/"Lazy Eight")

Are the any CP rules about a level of Education?
I assume that understanding of the Articles is required to get a berth on a ship, As someone who's spent too long in Learning Disability Offices, I know how to work the systems.

I would assume so also. But the needed level may not be as high as one might think. Level of education also does not always equate to intelligence or comprehension level. (despite what some would have you think)

I'm guessing they home school their children. On a world where the primary livelihood is fishing and shamanizing, there really wouldn't be a need for specialized or extended education outside those areas unless you actually needed to do so (like maybe if you wanted to work on the orbital or leave the planet). St. Cloud is a fairly rustic place. More like a seaside village vs a towering metropolis, hence the needs are different. But maybe Nate has another explanation.
